Extra Credit

Singapore has a population said to be 5m people. With a number so large, its land mass is not big enough to support all the inhabitants. With a water being an issue, the Singaporean government has fallen under the thought of using distilled water. Though the distillation process is costly, the government has teamed up with a German engineering company that claims they can cut the price range in half. Making distillation a reasonable idea. They are running one demonstration plant now, however the construction of the full plant has already begun and its on its way to changing the lives of many in Singapore.

Blog Question: For you, what has been the most valuable learning from summer Chemistry (and why)?

I think that my most valuable thing I learned from this summer chemistry course was responsibility. I feel like in order to be successful in this class, the key thing was responsibility. If it was doing homework every night and posting it on your blog. Or studying in order to do well on the quiz at the end of the week.  In this class there was  a lot of work that was pushed into six weeks, so responsibility was the greatest role in success, and learning.

Zoobotics (Extra Credit)

Until now, when people think of robots they think of the onlys with claws that crash into eachother, or the ones with human likes qualities, much like C3PO. Companies like Sony have made robot dogs that too most can just be considered as "toys". But no longer, sudden advances in this technologic field have created something that will no longer associate the word "toy" with robots. Cecillia Laschi of Sant'Anna School of Advanced studies in Pisa have taken it upon themselves to create a robotic octopus. The team took the time to study the body of an octopus themsleves, in order to properly remake it in robot form. Once they were done with this study they made a casting out of sillicone and was fitted with pressure sensors. Inside the cast are cables made of elastic nickel titanium alloy. This allows the arm to wrap around much like an octopus would. However; sense there is only one arm made it is really a monopus. But in the next two years Laschi plans on making 7 more arms, and complete the project. This is only one of many different examples of Zoobotics. Other groups are engineering different fish, geckos, and shrews. With advances in technology all this may be a possibility to see in our future.

Manganese Metal Project

For my Metal Report I luckily was given Manganese! Here are some great facts and information I have learned.

Manganese is a transition metal with the symbol Mn. The atomic weight is 54.9380, and has an atomic number of 25. Mn contains 30 neutrons, 25 protons and 25 electrons. It is utilizes in food consumption and some industrial uses. Mn is used to make some characteristics such as strength, hardness, and durability. Manganese is also a main component in steel. Really, steel can not be made with out manganese because it is a big part of steel itself. Manganese is also used to create color in glass, it plays a role in why quartz is somewhat purple. Mn makes a lot of coloring in many substances, however;  most manganese oxide turns out to be black. Still, it is essential for the production of iron and steel. Manganese slowly combines with oxygen to make manganese oxide, and at higher temp. it reacts rapidly. When it is heated, manganese gives off a bright white light. Mn reacts slowly with cold water, but faster as the temperature rises. It does in fact react with most acids, resulting in the release of hydrogen gas. Also combining with fluorine and chloride making manganese difluoride and manganese dichloride.

Manganese can be made in a scientific lab, and is found around the earth. Mn is reactive when pure, and if in powder form it can burn oxygen.
Manganese was founded in 1774. Its not combustible but can enhance combustibility in other substances. Mn happens to be very expensive and is highly needed. It can be found in tiny amounts of the earths water. Its found everywhere and is one of the three toxic essential trace elements. Which means that the body needs it to survive but if there is too much it can be very dangerous in the body.

NBA Shutdown (Extra Credit)

Last NBA season was remarked to be one of the greatest and most thrilling yet in the history of the league. However, many off court troubles may sideline all players from playing next season. The NBA has "locked out" its players due to an unseen failed agreement between two sides of the NBA. This lock out is a shock to many, after what most called an "Amazing" season came to an end. David Stern, the NBA commissioner, stated that in terms of popularity everything was great. But this popularity was not profitable to many owners. This means that when the league returns many of the players salaries will drop, which is also causing conflict. With so many problems the NBA is facing, many do not see an upcoming season next year.

In India, child malnutrition is a growing epidemic. Most children under the age of five suffer from malnutrition. Malnutrition can lead to a weakened immune system which is a stepping stone to getting diseases or any other kind of illnesses. However this is normal to the people of this area. Due to poverty and an unfit water supply ,any children under the age of five in all areas and societies of india are suffering.  India is the top leader of malnutrition. And as water quality and quantity shortens malnutrition is on the rise.
